Burundi is one of the smallest and least developed countries in Africa, located in the Great Lakes region between East and Central Africa. More than half of the population is under 18 years old, and the country faces high levels of poverty, limited access to education, and few opportunities for young people.
The project is located in the province of Bujumbura Rural, south of the capital Bujumbura. The area is relatively stable, but lacks basic facilities for children and youth. There are no safe spaces for leisure or learning, schools are overcrowded, and there are no structured after-school programmes.
Umoja Youth Center aims to change this. Ingenier:innen ohne Grenzen Austria & us, the local NGO Football Helps Association, work on building a youth centre, to combine sport, education, and community activities.

The Umoja Youth Center aims to create a safe and inclusive space where children can grow, learn, and develop their potential. The project will provide essential infrastructure, including a football pitch, reliable water supply, and electricity, while offering after-school programmes, workshops, and educational activities.
Beyond sports, the center will promote social integration, support girls’ participation, and encourage environmental awareness. By involving the local community and creating opportunities for local ownership, the project will have a lasting positive impact and contribute to local economic development.
